On Magic And Mystery
For me, Magic is backpacking in the wilderness, charting a path to Divinity.
the major religions are like Towns and Cities with their own direct lines to Divinity. And Everything Else and In-Between are different settlements.
These all have been built by particular people, in particular ways and in relationship with a particular lived experience that is shaped by and shapes the Divine in turn. (This is a Mystery.)
The towns and cities, settlements and footpaths are all built with Tools, some of which are pretty basic and common and others that are highly specialized. The less common tools tend to be most useful in the town/city/settlement they were developed for. (Many a janky settlement has been built with Someone Else’s Out-Of-Context Tools but that’s a discussion for another time.)
Still, I have some Tools I picked up from when I visited different settlements, that someone left behind on the side of a road, that some being or other gave to me in my travels and one or two make-shift ones that I’ve put together on my own. I take these things and make my way.
The wilderness is beautiful. There are things that one can only see and know in the wilderness. The wilderness is also dangerous. And sometimes lonely.
Every now and then I run into other people like me in the wilderness and we hang together for a while. Maybe we’ll start a settlement of our own or maybe I’ll find a clearing and build a little house or maybe I’ll just keep walking.
But the wilds call to me.
The Divine says “Come and Find Me.” (This is a Mystery.)
So I go.
